Weekly news round up
Kevin McCarthy elected Speaker, supporters of Bolsonaro storm government buildings in Brazil, and more
Hi Clarity readers,
I’d like to start with a quick introduction.
I’ve been spending the last few months working with Rohan to build Clarity - an AI powered news reader to help reduce media bias and pop your filter bubble. I’ll also be subbing in on a number of these weekly news roundups, starting with today’s. I’m excited to explore the wild, wonderful, and (on occasion) woefully biased world of news media with you.
Let’s get to it!
Kevin McCarthy wins speaker election after cutting deals with GOP holdouts
As this story has evolved, we’ve seen the coverage evolve with it. Earlier this week this story was mostly being reported by left and center-leaning sources, and the right was visibly ignoring it—likely because it didn’t flatter their preferred party.
They have since caught up in their coverage, particularly after Congressman McCarthy successfully brokered a deal with the GOP holdouts.
How the various sides have been portraying this story:
Left
The left is highlighting concessions made by Kevin McCarthy to far-right members of the GOP.
They are also focusing on how those members were in open revolt against McCarthy and house GOP leadership
Center
The center has been mostly focused on the impact of January 6 on McCarthy's chances of winning the Speakership
Right
The right has been emphasizing McCarthy’s victory in the 15th vote
They have also been highlighting the concessions McCarthy made to be House Speaker

Supporters of ex-President Bolsonaro have been arrested after storming government buildings in Brazil
The right have been very conspicuously ignoring this story to date, and there’s been zero mention on Fox News as of late Wednesday. This isn’t too surprising given this story shares an uncanny resemblance to the events of January 6th.
How the various sides have been portraying this story:
Left
The left is focusing on the prosecution of those involved in the riots
They are also focused on the event’s resemblance to similar events on January 6th, and the Bolsonaro-Trump connection
Center
The center is focused on the facts of the riot, large-scale arrests of over 1,500 people, and Bolsonaro being admitted to hospital in Florida
Right
The right has been ignoring this story

Classified documents found at Biden think tank
Given its political nature, this story has mostly been reported on by both the right and left-leaning media, with only minor attention paid by center-leaning outlets.
How the various sides have been reporting this story:
Left
The left is focused on the number of documents found at Biden's think tank
They are also drawing contrasts to classified documents found at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort, and arguing that the Trump case was worse due to the number of classified documents involved

Right
The right is focused on how differences in the handling of this case compared to when Trump was found in possession of classified documents in August of last year
