Our country is divided and the media is polarized. In Top Down News, we unify, compare, and distill many mainstream perspectives that capture most of America’s political readership to approximate the truth. Find the full analytics and methodology at the end of this post
Sources Tracked: BBC, CNN, Fox News, National Review, NBC News, New York Times, Reuters, Washington Examiner, Washington Post, Washington Times, Wall Street Journal

Here’s a top-level view of how Left-leaning outlets and Right-leaning outlets are pushing stories to their readers.

Commentary: There’s no single objective process when it comes to deciding how newsworthy a topic is; instead, there are judgment calls based on competing interests. The Democrats have lost ground to Republicans in the midterm elections. Based on that, we’re seeing shifts in reporting from both the left and right. The Left is increasing its international coverage of topics such as the Seoul Halloween Crowd Crush and the Kremlin. Meanwhile, the Right is magnifying domestic politics, such as Fetterman vs Oz, Kari Lake, or Biden’s Oil Dealings.

The following sections go into what stories and narratives the Left and Right-leaning outlets are magnifying and minimizing. Topic coverage is a significant lever that media outlets use to bias the reader. By Fox focusing on the border and CNN focusing on shootings, their respective readers will be thinking more about these topics than other ones. Below is the categorization of outlets, based on the AllSides Media Bias Chart.

🟦 Left: CNN, NBC News, New York Times, Washington Post

⬜️ Center: BBC, Reuters, Wall Street Journal

🟥 Right: Fox News, The National Review, Washington Examiner, Washington Times

Elon Musk Pushes Conspiracy Theory That Paul Pelosi Is Involved In Sex Trafficking Ring

🟦
Top Headlines

WASHINGTONPOST: Musk deleted a tweet about Paul Pelosi. Here’s why that matters.

Commentary: Is Elon Musk the new “Trump” for the left? With his outsized influence in media, public distaste of the current Democratic party, and his acquisition of Twitter, where largely left-leaning elite hang out online, there is an eerily similar narrative arc compared to Trump.

Right Magnify 🟥🔎

Commentary: Right-winged outlets are cheering on momentum in key states, such as Pennsylvania and Arizona. Should the left cover losses as much as wins?

Right Minimize 🟥🙈

Commentary: The Right doesn’t seem to have any interest in international news. The most striking miss here is how little coverage there was, especially from Fox News, on the Brazilian Presidential Election, where the Right-winged incumbent was narrowly defeated and didn’t verbally concede the loss.
